Navigating Life’s Big Changes with Joy and Ease
Navigating Life’s Big Changes with Joy and Ease By Deborah Roth, MA, PCC I’ve been working with folks who are in the midst of big life transitions since the mid-90s when I was first trained as a coach… probably because I’d been through some biggies myself and had collected lots of good tools along the way. So, I was particularly delighted to discover JOYELY® and add the powerful Chair of JOY® experience to my toolbox! Our visionary founder, Sheryl Lynn, has beautifully captured ways that you can know joy every day in her recent blog, and I believe you can also draw on those four simple steps – SIT. BREATHE. THINK. FEEL. – to support you through your next big life change as well. Before I show you how, I think it would be helpful to first understand this relatively new field of “Transition Psychology.” Let’s start with a question: How many transitions you are in the midst of right now? Professional ones might be job/career changes or retirement, and personal ones would be births, deaths, divorce, moving, etc. Take a moment and think about it. More often than not, when we’re experiencing change in one area of our lives, there’s a pretty good chance that things are shifting and moving in other places as well. Even if you’re keeping your head above water, I’ll bet that there are all kinds of hidden things (unmet needs, unresolved feelings, incomplete conversations) swimming around in the murky waters around you, waiting to grab hold when you least expect it. That’s the nature of change. So here’s a radical notion: maybe change isn’t all that bad. Maybe it can be a vital, pleasurable, transformative process. I know, experts say we resist it. Most of us are intimidated by it. Some of us claim we thrive on it, but we’re probably lying. Who really likes change? The truth is, when you let go of what no longer fits, the result is usually a change for the better. Maybe it can actually be a life affirming, spiritually-directed experience that enlivens you and brings you more joy and satisfaction. Doesn’t that sound like a hopeful possibility to explore? The predictable flow of change Fortunately, no matter how it’s triggered, the stages of transition are pretty predictable… how nice that at least some part of the process is! Arnold Van Gennup, the Dutch anthropologist who coined the phrase “rites of passage” over 100 years ago, talked about these occasions being made up of three phases: Separation; Transition; and ultimately, Incorporation. Even more viscerally, he describes it as: dying→chaos→renewal. Truly, there’s no avoiding the fact that we must let go, separate, or perhaps more dramatically, kill off some part of ourselves, our lives, our work, our outworn ways of being, to make room for what’s ready to flow in. As William Bridges, the granddaddy of modern transition theory, says “To gain, you must first give up. Every transition begins with an ending. We have to let go of the old before we can take on the new… not just outwardly, but inwardly, too.” I believe that one of the most powerful things we can do to support ourselves (and others) through life’s big changes is to mark each stage of the process in some way. That way, we won’t get stuck at any one point and can keep our forward movement flowing toward whatever juicy new opportunities lie on the other side. Using the Chair of JOY® to mark each stage of transition In my book, Circle of One, The Art of Becoming a SELF-Centered Woman, I offer my own take on this three-step process: we “begin” with an ending, or “RELEASE” we then move through a reassessment period, or “RETREAT”; then we arrive at a new beginning, or “REBIRTH”. In the book, I share lots of examples of rituals and ceremonies to celebrate big and small life transitions – that’s one of my passions and actually the focus of my Master’s thesis years ago. What I’ll do here is share a simple ritual for each stage, as well as a suggested focus for your COJ experience. Release Stage Ritual Rituals of release can take many forms… some of the more familiar ones are funerals, retirement dinners or going away parties. A more personalized one might be to create a “farewell” altar for a loved one who has died, or a project/job that’s ended. Include special photos, mementos or symbols of your history with them. Light a candle of gratitude for all they brought to your life and when it burns down, store your altar contents in a special box as keepsakes for that person/experience. Chair of JOY® In the SIT portion of your COJ meditation, you might first conjure up a significant chair that reflects the person or role you’re letting go of. Maybe sitting in your grandmother’s favorite rocking chair? Or under the tree where you got some of your most creative ideas for the project or job that’s ended? In the THINK portion, let a special memory bubble up related to what you’re releasing, and in the FEEL segment, allow yourself to “feel all the feels” right now – sadness or regrets, but maybe also gratitude and/or pride. Retreat Stage Ritual In ancient cultures, the value of this period was understood and the elders of the community prescribed rites of passage in the form of vision quests or solitary refuge. This is the time to really tap into your intuition. Create sacred space where you can journal, with gentle music, glowing candles, and aromatherapy (jasmine and lotus are perfect for deep reflection). Ask yourself some powerful questions (What do I need to learn from this experience? How can I best use my gifts to prepare for what’s next?) and allow the answers to flow from your deepest self on to your journal pages. Chair of JOY® The COJ is a perfect container for this deep reflection time, at every stage. When you SIT, imagine
My Chair Forged in Fire
My Chair Forged in Fire By Rachel Vasquez ~ A Grief Warrior For warriors, a sword forged in fire symbolizes honor and identity. The weapon is a testament to dedication, skill, and bravery. In Norse mythology, tales of the creation of such a weapon often involve fire and divine intervention, enhancing its mystique and perceived power. It marked the responsibilities and dangers that a warrior faced and the decisions that would have to be made in battle, moving with integrity, bravery, and steadfastness. For me, now, my sword is my personal Chair of Joy. My chair is forged by fire. My Chair of Joy is the weapon I use to fight for my warrior self. I have fought grief from the loss of my husband, insecurity over building a business, imposter syndrome, lack of self-worth, and fear of being a bad parent—just to name a few. I have used my Chair of Joy to reconcile the obstacles that have tried to hold me back and obstruct my vision. When I sit and bring in a feeling of joy, letting it consume my essence to a place of vulnerability and curiosity about what is possible, I ignite the fire that burns inside of me. I feed that fire of my passion until my very soul’s certainty is ready to burst into action. I leap with faith in myself, through my battles of self, feeling the triumph of being in action and loving myself, taking care of myself—all from a place of joy and celebration. I celebrate not only my triumphs but also when things don’t go the way I had hoped. Because if it weren’t for trying, how would I gain the experience and knowledge that will continue to make me successful in other pursuits? So you see, my Chair of Joy is forged by fire. It is my companion when I sit and breathe, comforting and steadying me. It is my weapon, the part that moves me into action as I think and feel about the possibilities of what I dream. This transformational weapon of bringing joy carries my legacy. It inspires generational healing not just for me but for my children as well, symbolizing the continuation of bravery and honor that we as a family continue to forge through life’s adversities into the celebration of growth and resilience. It fills me up and allows my inner goddess warrior to rise with courage and determination in my joy, in my own personal JOYELY movement. The Power of the Steps of the Chair of Joy Experience Sitting in my Chair of Joy is the first step in my ritual. This is not just a physical act but a mental one as well. It represents my willingness to pause, to take a moment for myself, to acknowledge that I am worth this time. Sitting down means I am ready to enter a space of intention and connect with my calm. In this moment, I ground myself and prepare to journey inward. Breathing is the lifeline that connects me to the present moment. As I sit in my Chair of Joy, I take deep breaths, inhaling peace and exhaling all that is no longer serving my highest self. This act of breathing aligns my mind and body, creating the centerline for joy to enter. Each breath I take is a reminder that I am alive, that I have the power to create my state of being. With every inhale and exhale, I am forging a stronger connection to my whole being and my intentions. Thinking in my Chair of Joy is a focused, deliberate act. I reflect on my experiences, my goals, and my dreams. I think about the challenges I have faced and how I have overcome them. I think about the little girl inside of me that sings and dances. It is with this version of myself that I visualize my path forward. Here, I allow my mind to explore possibilities, to dream big, and to overflow with excitement as I realize and achieve my aspirations. This stokes the passions of the fire that burns in my soul, where my ideas begin to bud and come to fruition. Feeling is the final and perhaps the most powerful component of my Chair of Joy ritual. It is here that I let my emotions flow freely. I allow myself to feel the joy, the excitement, the hope that comes from my dreams and plans. But I also allow myself to feel the pain, the fear, the uncertainty that comes with life’s challenges. By fully embracing my emotions, I am able to process and move through them. Feeling in my Chair of Joy is what truly transforms me, turning my thoughts into action and my dreams into reality. My Chair of Joy is my sacred space where I reconnect with myself, where I find strength and inspiration. It is a symbol of my journey, of the battles I have fought and the victories I have won. It is a reminder that joy is always within reach, even in the midst of life’s struggles. As I continue to sit, breathe, think, and feel in my Chair of Joy, I carry forward a legacy of resilience, honor, and joy. This is my weapon, my source of power, and my testament to living a life filled with purpose and passion. I embrace love, trust in self, walk in light, and share my love. All Paths Lead to Joy
All Paths Lead to Joy: The Joy-Driven Blueprint for Organizational Excellence By Sheryl Lynn Humanity has always strived for joy in everything we do, whether it be through innovation, revolution, or evolution. This pursuit of joy is not a lesser goal, but rather one that provides clarity and direction for our actions. By understanding that joy is the ultimate destination for most, we can pave a smoother path towards achieving it. This concept is not just a fabricated story; it is grounded in real experiences of individuals and organizations who have successfully incorporated JOYELY’s Chair of Joy Experience into their endeavors. Let’s examine the characteristics of a leader who can lead others to a “Chair of Joy” Experience, creating engaging sessions that involve everyone and leave them fully present and invested in the day ahead. Visionary: A leader with the ability to implement the Chair of Joy Experience and System must first have a clear vision of what that looks like and how it can be achieved. They are able to inspire and motivate others to work towards this vision. Empathetic: Joy cannot be achieved without understanding the needs and emotions of those around us. A good leader will possess empathy and use it to create a positive and inclusive environment for all team members. Creative: The Chair of Joy Experience may require out-of-the-box thinking and unconventional approaches. A leader with a creative mindset will be able to come up with unique solutions and strategies to incorporate joy into their leadership style. Decisive: In order to bring about change and shift gears towards the Chair of Joy Experience, a leader must be able to make decisive decisions and take action quickly and confidently. Authentic: People are more likely to follow a leader who they believe is genuine and authentic. A leader who embodies the values and principles of the Chair of Joy Experience will be more successful in implementing it within their organization. Resilient: Leading with a focus on joy may face resistance or challenges along the way. A resilient leader will be able to bounce back from setbacks and continue pushing forward towards their goal. Collaborative: The Chair of Joy system relies on teamwork and collaboration to be successful. A leader who values the input and contributions of their team members will be able to create a more joyful and inclusive environment. Continuously learning: A leader must have a growth mindset and be open to continuously learning and improving their skills in order to effectively implement the Chair of Joy system within their organization. By possessing these qualities, a leader can successfully guide others towards wildly successful workplaces that know harmony. The Chair of Joy system impacts people, problems, and purpose. The Importance of Joy in the Workplace For many organizations, the mission is often framed in terms of achieving specific goals, whether they are financial, social, or cultural. Yet, at the core of these missions is a desire to enhance the well-being and happiness of people—employees, customers, and communities. When CEOs and organizational leaders grasp this concept, they unlock the potential for profound success. Let’s explore how companies can generate joy and why this leads to better outcomes. With our endless to-do list, it’s easy for this task to fall to the back burner. But at JOYELY, we know that setting up our teammates for success is vital in the workplace. That’s why we make it a priority to start and frequently revisit the “Chair” throughout the day—especially when things aren’t going as smoothly as we’d like. When we stop and pause, take 60 seconds for the 4 steps: Sit, breathe, think, and feel, we can allow the rough patch to dissipate by eliminating some of its energy and nurturing something else, remembering how great our work normally is. The Chair of Joy is also great when things are going well. By celebrating even the small victories, we keep morale high and energize our entire team. Most importantly, it’s about the routine, so you can catch real highs and lows in the middle of it. This starts to lay the groundwork for an overall increased KPI for your company as a whole. Yes, it takes commitment and belief in the process to truly see its benefits. Setting a goal to incorporate these practices multiple times a day is an essential first step towards creating a positive work environment. And who knows, maybe we’ll find ourselves doing them even more often than planned. And guess what? It’s fun. People laugh, they tell stories, they feel appreciated, and they have a sense of belonging. “Gosh, the CEO just took some time to come sit with me in the Chair of Joy!” The #1 Rule for CEOs: Use the Chair of Joy For CEOs, the key to success is simple: use the Chair of Joy. By integrating this practice into your daily routine, you create an environment where joy and well-being can thrive. Humans are on this planet to experience joy, and as a CEO, your job is to increase profits, improve customer satisfaction, and keep all employees thriving. Creating an environment where “JOY THRIVES HERE” is essential. However, focusing solely on strategy and operations won’t be enough. To truly thrive, you need real-time, authentic leadership that emphasizes a sense of joy within your organization. This is where the Chair of Joy becomes a priority. By regularly using the Chair of Joy yourself, you set an example for your entire organization, demonstrating the importance of taking moments to sit, breathe, think, and feel. Implementing and personally engaging with the Chair of Joy sends a powerful message: Joy is at the heart of our organization. When you take time to experience joy, it influences your leadership style, decision-making, and the overall workplace culture. Employees are more likely to follow suit, leading to a more positive, motivated, and productive workforce. Using the Chair of Joy creates an atmosphere of genuine well-being. It shows that you prioritize
Epic Joy: Why Organizations Are Catching Up
Epic Joy: Why Organizations Are Catching Up How Does a Dog Know When It’s Time for Joy? Dogs walk around in joy, radiating contentment because their general sense of well-being is rooted in being seen and appreciated for their kindness and loyalty. They wag their tails, chase after sticks, and delight in the simplest pleasures, knowing that life is meant to be enjoyed in the moment. They don’t wait for a reason to be joyful; they create joy from their surroundings and interactions. How Does a Company Know That Joy Works? A company knows that prioritizing joy works when its employees are thriving, collaboration is seamless, and innovation is at its peak. Joy in the workplace fuels creativity, boosts morale, and leads to a more cohesive and productive team. When joy is prioritized, the results speak for themselves—higher engagement, better performance, and a happier work environment. Life Is Really Good When You Can Do More of What Matters to You One executive uses the Chair of Joy when feeling overwhelmed. When she asks for a Chair of Joy break, her team gladly closes the door for her. She closes her eyes and follows the four steps: sit, breathe, think, and feel. During the experience, she remembers why she started the company, how grateful she is that her employees show up every day, and the significant impact she is making. Afterward, she can open the door and carry on with her tasks, this time with an energy that moves mountains. Embrace the Chair of Joy and Elevate Your Life! Picture this: You, in your Chair of Joy, taking a moment to sit, breathe, think, and feel. It’s in these moments of stillness that you find clarity, peace, and an overwhelming sense of joy. The Chair of Joy isn’t just a seat; it’s a gateway to a more intentional, balanced, and focused life. By making joy a priority, happiness naturally follows. According to a study by the University of Warwick, organizations focusing on employee well-being see a 20% increase in productivity and a 30% reduction in employee turnover. What is your organization doing when it comes to joy as a core life skill? This is not simple. The results of joy as a core life skill are the genius of leaders heading up companies to know what matters, and joy is not easily accessible without training, focus, and priority. That is why JOYELY is excited to meet the demands of healthcare facilities, organizations with global humanitarian missions, and nonprofits that care about health equity. Join the ranks of companies and non-profits who are feeling the effects of the shift to joy. It is a movement, and we invite you to play along while getting more done. Riding the Rollercoaster with My Dream Team
Riding the Rollercoaster with My Dream Team What a year it’s been so far! Between personal breakthroughs and navigating the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with leading a visionary company like JOYELY, I’ve learned a lot—especially about the fears of failure and success. It’s like walking a tightrope sometimes, but thank goodness for my team. They’re more than just colleagues; they’re the net that catches me every time I teeter. Honestly, there are days when I feel like I might just sabotage everything. Thoughts like “everyone is leaving me” or “I’m not smart enough” creep in. It’s tough. But then, there are these moments during our team meetings when everything just clicks. I might start off a meeting feeling all wound up, frustration bubbling over, but then it transforms. It turns into this outpouring of support and understanding that really just boils down to love—love for what we do and for each other. We use the Chair of Joy a lot—it’s our secret weapon. When we sit down and go through the experience, it’s not just about finding peace or clarity; it’s about uncovering fresh perspectives that propel us forward. It’s this amazing tool that reminds us, hey, sometimes you need to stop completely to really get moving again. Watching other big movements grow, like Taylor Nation, it’s clear people crave communities built on hope and joy. It’s inspiring and makes me think we’re onto something big. Shout out time to the real MVPs—Jennifer Cavender, Rebecca Gold, Debbie Prediger, Bailey Romatoski, and Mike Robinson. These amazing people aren’t just part of the team; they are the glue holding everything together. Their hard work and dedication are what allows us to create the Chair of Joy Experience far and wide. Reflecting on this journey, I’m just filled with so much hope. There’s this rockstar, famous rapper my kids are into, he wrote 1,500 songs before his big break, knowing just one had to catch on. It reminds me that we’re just at the beginning, and the best is yet to come and we are in the middle of all the glory of building something extraordinary. So, to everyone out there feeling the weight of their dreams—hang in there. Lean on your people, trust your gut, and take it one step at a time. Together, we’re not looking for, or chasing joy; we’re living it, every single day, even in all the chaos. Remember to grab your Chair of Joy, follow the 4 steps: Sit, Breathe, Think, and Feel. Enjoy the rollercoaster ride of emotions, coming to a full stop, elevated, and feeling ready for whatever comes next. Cristina’s Journey Through the Chair of Joy
Cristina’s Journey Through the Chair of JoyA New Relationship with Her Departed Brother As I sat down to interview Cristina, a dedicated worker at Homeland Security, the weight of her responsibilities was palpable. Amidst our discussion on Cultural Wellness, Cristina revealed the strain she was under, not only from her demanding job but also from the recent loss of her brother. A Glimpse into Cristina’s World As Cristina shared her struggles, I knew she needed a moment of respite. I suggested trying the Chair of Joy experience, hoping it might offer her some solace amidst her grief. With a heavy heart, she agreed, and thus began a journey of profound transformation. Embracing the Chair of Joy Guiding Cristina through the Chair of Joy experience over the phone, I could hear the weight of her emotions in every breath. Settling into her favorite spot on the couch, she embarked on a journey of self-reflection and renewal. As she delved into memories of her brother and the moments they shared, I could sense her longing for his presence. A New Connection with Her Brother Through the Chair of Joy, Cristina found a way to reconnect with her brother in a profound and meaningful way. In the sanctuary of her mind, she envisioned him walking into the room, cracking open a beer, and inviting her to the beach, just like old times. The image brought tears to her eyes, but also a sense of joy and comfort amidst her grief. Renewed Hope and Comfort As Cristina emerged from the Chair of Joy experience, she spoke with a calmness and clarity that belied the storm of emotions she had just weathered. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to not only remember her brother but to forge a new relationship with him, one that transcended the bounds of time and space. The Power of the Chair of Joy Cristina’s journey exemplifies the profound impact of the Chair of Joy. It’s not just a practice; it’s a lifeline for those navigating the depths of grief and loss. Worries to Smiles: A Teen’s Joy
Worries to Smiles: A Teen’s Joy The other day, I asked a teenager to do a Chair of Joy with me. We were on Zoom. She told me her chair was in a boat with her family. She took a few deep breaths. I watched her as she sat back in her chair, relaxed, and even closed her eyes. The worry about our conversation slipped from her face. I could see she immediately felt empowered to not perform and step into being herself. Then I asked her to think of a moment that made her giggle. Her face changed; it was like someone flipped a switch inside of her. Her straight lips turned into a tiny upward curl, her shoulders dropped even further, and she started nodding her head in agreement as she discovered something really good from a memory she recalled from her past. Lastly, I asked her to feel it in her body, guiding the emotion I saw on her face through her whole body. When she finished the four steps of the Chair of Joy Experience—Sit, Breathe, Think, and Feel—I asked her to open her eyes. The grin got bigger, and her whole demeanor, along with her laughter, told a story that I simply cannot describe. You have to see it for yourself. “Every single time you think of a chair from now on, or sit down, you will remember that you have the ability to get out of worry, sadness, and depression and into something better—hope, courage, strength.” The Importance of Joy Teachers, nurses, educators, mental health professionals, and those who make decisions for families, communities, and nonprofits supporting youth mental health and well-being: Time is going by. Every day we get to live on this planet is another opportunity to step into the ability to have the best life and avoid the messiness the best we can. If you work with kids, I want you to know that I have dedicated my whole life to seeing and hearing them, and then watching them grow up with awe and wonder. Often, they forget who they are and their value. There is not one more moment that can go by without children, and all of us, stepping into the power and massive choice selection, using the power of neuroscience to know how to use joy as a core life skill. That is what we are doing at JOYELY. We can come into your staff meeting, do a lunch and learn, organize an event around the Chair of Joy so easily—in person or virtual, anywhere in the world. In 60 seconds or less, we can share one of the most valuable lessons: giving the gift of the most awesome way to get our life back on course, no matter the age. All we need is a chair. Every single time you think of a chair from now on, or sit down, you will remember that you have the ability to get out of worry, sadness, and depression and into something better—hope, courage, strength. When we do that over and over, our eyes open, we can hear again, and mostly, we can feel our worth. Therefore, we make better decisions. We have the data. Don’t delay. Let’s set this up as soon as possible for the people you love. The best investment of our time and energy for our young people, I believe, can have long-lasting positive effects, creating a universal language of joy and living JOYELY ever after. Of course, this includes being aware of all our emotions so we can rise up, do what is expected of us, and more importantly, live out our dreams. Let the universal language of joy ring through our families, communities, nation, and world. We are ready when you are. “What if Joy Could – A Global Call to Know the Power of Joy”
“What if Joy Could – A Global Call to Know the Power of Joy” In a world where joy gets brushed off like crumbs from a cookie, the ‘What if Joy Could’ campaign swoops in with a real-deal solution to global woes, and it’s backed by science! Who knew joy could be the superhero we needed? This innovative initiative invites individuals from all walks of life to ponder the transformative power of joy and consider how it can be integrated into their daily lives. At its core, the campaign poses a simple yet profound question: What if joy could…? Imagine a world where joy is not just an occasional feeling but a core life skill, nurtured and cultivated with intention. The “What if Joy Could” campaign challenges us to explore this possibility, offering a fresh perspective on the importance of joy in our personal and collective well-being. The Importance of Joy Joy is a powerful and transformative emotion that can significantly enhance our lives. It is more than just a fleeting feeling of happiness; joy is a deep-seated sense of well-being that can positively impact our mental, emotional, and physical health. When we prioritize joy, we can: Improve Mental Health: Joy can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, helping us maintain a more positive outlook on life. Strengthen Relationships: Shared joy fosters deeper connections with others, promoting empathy, compassion, and understanding. Boost Resilience: Joy helps us cope with challenges and setbacks, providing the strength and optimism needed to overcome adversity. Enhance Creativity: Joy fuels innovation and creativity, enabling us to think more freely and express ourselves fully. Solve World Problems: Joy fosters a collaborative and positive mindset, driving efforts to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. The Chair of Joy® Experience The Chair of Joy® Experience is centered around the Chair of Joy, a symbol and tool crafted to aid individuals in experiencing all emotions, nurturing even those that may not initially feel pleasant, so that all emotions can be acknowledged and understood. The Chair of Joy Experience consists of four simple steps: Sit, Breathe, Think, and Feel. By integrating this distinctive framework into their daily routines, people can cultivate personal responsibility for their joy, leading to a more positive perspective and a deeper sense of fulfillment. Sit: Take a moment to pause and sit down, establishing a dedicated space for joy. Breathe: Engage in deep, mindful breathing to quiet the mind and relax the body. Think: Reflect on positive thoughts and memories that evoke joy. Feel: Allow the positive emotions to flow through you, fully immersing yourself in the sensation of joy. Extending Joy’s Reach The campaign’s reach extends beyond individual joy, highlighting its potential impact in various spheres, including healthcare and education. Imagine a healthcare environment where joy empowers patients on their healing journeys, reduces stress and anxiety, and enhances pain management. Or consider the educational realm, where joy enables teachers to collaborate more effectively on safety and critical issues in schools, and where children can nurture their emotions, transforming their thoughts and fostering a positive mindset. This vision is not just a dream but a tangible goal that the “What if Joy Could” campaign aims to achieve. By incorporating this unique framework into their routines, people of all ages can learn to take personal responsibility for their joy, fostering a more positive outlook and a deeper sense of fulfillment.
