Worries to Smiles: A Teen's Joy

The other day, I asked a teenager to do a Chair of Joy with me. We were on Zoom. She told me her chair was in a boat with her family. She took a few deep breaths. I watched her as she sat back in her chair, relaxed, and even closed her eyes. The worry about our conversation slipped from her face. I could see she immediately felt empowered to not perform and step into being herself.

Then I asked her to think of a moment that made her giggle. Her face changed; it was like someone flipped a switch inside of her. Her straight lips turned into a tiny upward curl, her shoulders dropped even further, and she started nodding her head in agreement as she discovered something really good from a memory she recalled from her past. Lastly, I asked her to feel it in her body, guiding the emotion I saw on her face through her whole body. When she finished the four steps of the Chair of Joy Experience—Sit, Breathe, Think, and Feel—I asked her to open her eyes. The grin got bigger, and her whole demeanor, along with her laughter, told a story that I simply cannot describe. You have to see it for yourself.

“Every single time you think of a chair from now on, or sit down, you will remember that you have the ability to get out of worry, sadness, and depression and into something better—hope, courage, strength.”

The Importance of Joy

Teachers, nurses, educators, mental health professionals, and those who make decisions for families, communities, and nonprofits supporting youth mental health and well-being:

Time is going by. Every day we get to live on this planet is another opportunity to step into the ability to have the best life and avoid the messiness the best we can. If you work with kids, I want you to know that I have dedicated my whole life to seeing and hearing them, and then watching them grow up with awe and wonder. Often, they forget who they are and their value. There is not one more moment that can go by without children, and all of us, stepping into the power and massive choice selection, using the power of neuroscience to know how to use joy as a core life skill.

That is what we are doing at JOYELY. We can come into your staff meeting, do a lunch and learn, organize an event around the Chair of Joy so easily—in person or virtual, anywhere in the world. In 60 seconds or less, we can share one of the most valuable lessons: giving the gift of the most awesome way to get our life back on course, no matter the age. All we need is a chair. Every single time you think of a chair from now on, or sit down, you will remember that you have the ability to get out of worry, sadness, and depression and into something better—hope, courage, strength. When we do that over and over, our eyes open, we can hear again, and mostly, we can feel our worth. Therefore, we make better decisions. We have the data. Don’t delay. Let’s set this up as soon as possible for the people you love.

The best investment of our time and energy for our young people, I believe, can have long-lasting positive effects, creating a universal language of joy and living JOYELY ever after. Of course, this includes being aware of all our emotions so we can rise up, do what is expected of us, and more importantly, live out our dreams.

Let the universal language of joy ring through our families, communities, nation, and world. We are ready when you are.
