A culture of joy can lead to improved mental health for companies by leveraging neuroscience and the human brain. The brain seeks out joyful emotions because it is associated with reward-seeking behavior and the production of dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of pleasure and motivation. Studies have shown that positive emotions lead to an increased level of physical and psychological well-being in people, as well as improved cognitive functioning and creativity (Fredrickson, 2001). Additionally, there is evidence that people who experience positive emotions regularly are better equipped to cope with stress and are more resilient than those who do not (Tugade & Fredrickson, 2004). By creating a culture of joy, companies can help employees to be more productive, creative, and emotionally resilient, leading to improved mental health.
