Neuroscience research has shown that positive emotions, such as joy, are associated with increased levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine is known to be involved in reward-motivated behavior and is associated with increased attention to detail and motivation. This means that when an employee experiences joy, they are more likely to be attentive and engaged with their work. The dopamine released helps increase creativity and motivation, the norepinephrine helps sustain focus and the serotonin helps regulate mood and helps maintain positive emotions.
A study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology in 2017 supports this conclusion. The study surveyed over 400 employees and found that those who reported higher levels of “job crafting joy” (the degree to which employees find joy in their work) also reported higher levels of job satisfaction, engagement, and overall well-being. Additionally, the study found that employees who experienced more joy in their work also reported better focus and were less likely to experience burnout.
