Arriving at the hospital, I drove into the parking lot and was greeted by a security person waving at me with a beaming smile. At first, I wondered if he was looking at me, and indeed he was. After parking, I saw Anthony outside the children’s hospital, diligently greeting and directing traffic to ensure families safely entered the doors. His presence left an indelible mark on my heart.
Anthony exuded warmth and kindness, and his gaze as he looked into people’s eyes made you feel instantly safe. Despite having held his position for a decade, he approached each day with the enthusiasm of someone starting anew, ready to offer strength and comfort to those facing the uncertainty of hospital visits.
His energy was infectious, his smile radiant as he welcomed each person with open arms. It was as if he was driven by a higher purpose, his love for others evident in every interaction. He possessed a unique ability to make you feel seen and understood, even in the midst of the most trying circumstances.
During Nurses Week, as we showcased the Chair of Joy for the staff, I insisted that Anthony join us on the third floor for a moment of respite in the “Chair of Joy.” When asked to pick his chair, he simply said, “the sky is my chair,” where he could keep an eye on everyone, he said. As he sat there, surrounded by his image of life, I asked him to recall a moment of joy, and his story of a child’s healing after a 7-month stay in the hospital filled the room with warmth and hope.
Anthony’s presence served as a poignant reminder that even in life’s darkest moments, there is always room for joy and hope. The twinkle in his eyes and the warmth of his hugs were a testament to the transformative power of kindness and compassion. Reflecting on our encounter, I am reminded of the profound impact of taking personal responsibility for joy wherever we go, just as Anthony has done for so many years. His team leader’s acknowledgment of his status as one of the most recognized employees on campus and the countless positive reviews speak volumes about the ripple effect of joy he has created, and I am truly grateful for Anthony’s presence in our lives. He is living JOYELY ever after, and I am thankful to have crossed paths with him.
It’s time to immerse ourselves completely in the conversation of joy, to prioritize it above most things.. There’s no time to wait; it’s a matter of life and death.
