Here’s what most people don’t realize: safety, presence, and joy are the building blocks of how your nervous system operates. They’re not abstract concepts. They’re actual neurological states that determine everything—how you think, how you feel, how you respond to life.

Safety is the foundation. When your brain feels safe, it can relax, think clearly, and access higher functions. When it doesn’t feel safe, it goes into defense mode. Everything else shuts down.

Presence is what happens when safety is established. You can actually be here, now, instead of scanning for threats or replaying the past or worrying about the future. Presence is where awareness lives.

What This Looks Like In Real Life

Let me give you a real example.

When I first developed this framework, I spent three months unpacking years of my own brokenness and trauma. Taking accountability. Becoming aware. Trusting the process. It was work. It was challenging. It was a reset to the very core.

But once the JOY Intelligence training took hold, I could access it in real time.

One afternoon, I got a call inviting me to a formal gala. All expenses paid.  I was at home getting ready for a nap. I had exactly 2.5 hours to get ready. It was a $250 value event—delicious dinner, 800 new friends, awards, dancing, the whole deal. And I didn’t have a dress. My nails weren’t done. Nothing was ready.

So I sat down and did a Chair of JOY.

Then I calmly drove to a local thrift store. Found a black dress for $12. Wasn’t even sure it would fit, but I bought it. Called the nail shop, got an appointment, got my nails done. Drove back home, asked my family for some support and affirmation that I was indeed gorgeous, and headed to the event.

Full red carpet. Feeling sexy, calm, and ready.

But when I walked in, the nervousness hit. Everyone was SO glamorous. What was I doing here?

Then a woman walked up to me and said, “I love your dress! Where did you get that?”

I giggle inside, know that this “look” I brought was nice, but I was not ready to tell the whole story. I excused myself, did a quick Chair of JOY in the corner, and something shifted. I realized that other people were uncomfortable too. For all kinds of reasons. That first wave of insecurity drifted away, and I walked up to a few people who looked like they were trying to figure out what to do with themselves. We connected, laughed and the tension dissolved. I trusted the evening would be fine. 

The rest of the night was fairy tale heaven. More than fine!
