Decoding Emotions: The Science of Safety, Presence, and Joy

The JOY Intelligence Emotions Map™ helps you understand what you’re feeling, why it matters, and where you might go next—not to fix yourself, but to know yourself and what your options are. This tool was created to bring structure and simplicity to emotional processing—using joy as a core life skill.

Inactive 

Emotions rooted in stress or trauma responses—fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or feign. They tend to require intention or mindfulness for clear and effective communication, especially when expressing pain, injustice, or urgency. Presence and safety are often low, making joy difficult to access. 

Awareness 

While all emotions carry information, those in the Awareness stage help us interpret or investigate the situation more deeply. This stage involves discerning meaning, making sense of what’s happening, and determining whether we’re able or willing to accept the current reality. 

Reflection 

Emotions in this stage invite introspection and support shifts in perspective. With increased presence, we become more open to change, able to analyze behavior objectively, and form new mental or emotional connections. Personal growth and deeper understanding often occur here. 

Expansion 

This is where emotional energy flows freely. Emotions in the Expansion stage are energizing, connecting, and inspiring. Neurotransmitters function optimally, and joy is more readily accessible. Communication becomes fluid, creativity flourishes, and alignment between body, mind, and emotion feels natural. 

How to use the JQ Emotions Map

Locate – Identify where you are on the map
  • What emotion are you experiencing?
  • Which stage of presence are you in?
  • Are you experiencing more than one emotion?
Explore – Understand the nature of your emotion
  • How would you describe your levels of safety, presence, and joy?
  • What barrier (Accountability, Acceptance, Trust) is present?
  • Do you want to stay with this emotion, or explore an alternative?
Shift – Aim for higher safety, presence, and/or joy
  • Stay where you are but elevate how you experience the emotion.
  • Move laterally to a different emotion on the same stage.
  • Progress through a barrier to the next stage of presence.
Integrate – Align mind, body, and emotions for lasting impact
  • Use the Chair of JOY® Experience: Sit, Breathe, Think, Feel.
  • Engage your body and senses—breathe, stretch, or move.
  • Ground yourself in a way that supports safety and well-being.
  • Create small shifts in thought or action to rewire your brain’s response.

Why We Don’t Use a Positive–Negative Scale

Emotions aren’t linear. They’re dimensional.

Most emotional check-ins use a 1–10 scale or ask if you feel “positive” or “negative.” But this creates a false sense of simplicity. It treats emotions like a straight line and ignores the complexity of how we actually feel.

The JOYELY Approach:  Instead of rating our own emotional state as good or bad, unnecessarily causing shame or guilt, we look at them through three separate lenses:

  • Joy – What is your level of joy, does it feel easy to access?
  • Safety – Do I feel physically and emotionally secure?
  • Presence – Am I engaged with myself and this moment?

This gives you a more accurate emotional snapshot—one that reveals what’s really going on beneath the surface.
