Inactive
Emotions rooted in stress or trauma responses—fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or feign. They tend to require intention or mindfulness for clear and effective communication, especially when expressing pain, injustice, or urgency. Presence and safety are often low, making joy difficult to access.
Awareness
While all emotions carry information, those in the Awareness stage help us interpret or investigate the situation more deeply. This stage involves discerning meaning, making sense of what’s happening, and determining whether we’re able or willing to accept the current reality.
Reflection
Emotions in this stage invite introspection and support shifts in perspective. With increased presence, we become more open to change, able to analyze behavior objectively, and form new mental or emotional connections. Personal growth and deeper understanding often occur here.
Expansion
This is where emotional energy flows freely. Emotions in the Expansion stage are energizing, connecting, and inspiring. Neurotransmitters function optimally, and joy is more readily accessible. Communication becomes fluid, creativity flourishes, and alignment between body, mind, and emotion feels natural.
Most emotional check-ins use a 1–10 scale or ask if you feel “positive” or “negative.” But this creates a false sense of simplicity. It treats emotions like a straight line and ignores the complexity of how we actually feel.
