Whether we are religious or not, the lyrics from the Christian song “Joy in My Heart” sum up what each of us has the capacity to connect to every day. Written by George William Cooke in 1925, the opening stanza is: “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart. Down in my heart. Down in my heart. I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart. Down in my heart to stay.” The reality of this concept is that we really do have joy down in our hearts. However, there are times when the pressures of our current experiences in life can cause our emotions to get in the way of recognizing what is at our core.

JOY Intelligence™ is understanding that, deep down at our center, joy is there no matter what else happens. We often confuse happiness, which is an emotion, with joy, which is a state of mind or being. Emotions are fickle. They are activated by the thoughts that go through our heads. (By the way, we have over 6,000 of those emotion ticklers a day!)

What kind of emotions get in the way of joy? Uncomfortable ones. There are no good or bad emotions. There are no positive or negative emotions. Emotions either increase our comfort or decrease it. Their purpose is to relay something to us.

There are times when we do not like what we are feeling, so we may attempt to pull away from or hide from the emotional pain that arises. JOY Intelligence™ is the knowledge that at my core is a ready reserve of life connection, which we call joy. In mindfulness practices, we consciously allow ourselves to sit in the discomfort of an emotion without hooking into it. We can train ourselves to do this by sitting in the Chair of JOY® and practicing the “Sit, Breathe, Think, Feel™ Experience.”

This is an important aspect of creating and maintaining mental health. Understanding that reaching and maintaining the joy within is not necessarily a direct “forward” motion. It is more like dancing the cha-cha: one step forward, two steps back; two steps forward, one step back. Our recognition of this fact allows us to give ourselves space to embrace the healing that our inner joy factor can and will create, if we mindfully choose to operate in and further develop our JOY Intelligence™. There is no stopping a person who is fully integrated with the deep, resonating joy that is inherently within us all.

JOY Intelligence™ is our superpower. It allows us to face the circumstances in our present moment. We become the heroes in our own story, and the stories of others, as we model behavior that is successful in developing peace of mind. We are no longer the victims of the tyranny of the now. We can work through our situations with purpose, rather than on autopilot. Mental health is about our ability to practice well-adapted coping mechanisms, returning us to homeostasis. This allows us to sing to those scary mountains or obstacles in our path, “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart.”
