The Roller Coaster Experience: Fear or Joy?

By Sheryl Lynn

Whether you've taken a ride on a roller coaster or watched others take the plunge, picture this: you're strapped in with the harness, heart pounding as the ride climbs the first hill. Every clink of the track amplifies your anticipation. Your stomach clenches with fear—whether it's the drop, the unexpected turns, or the rapid speed ahead. This fear is enough to keep some people as mere spectators.

But here's the reality: joy is there too. It's the memory of laughter from past rides, the excitement of challenging gravity, or the rush of adrenaline as you speed through loops. This joy is always there, quietly pulsing beneath the fear, ready to emerge.

Now, press your hands firmly against the table in front of you, as if gripping the safety bar of the coaster. Feel the tension in your hands—tight and controlled, holding on because fear is at the helm. As the coaster ascends, your grip tightens. But when you reach the top and start the descent, something changes. Speed and freedom surge through you, and suddenly, your grip loosens. Your fingers let go as joy breaks through the fear, turning hesitation into excitement.

By the second loop, your hands are up—not because the fear has vanished, but because joy has taken charge. The thrill carries you through the twists and turns, and you no longer rely on the safety bar for security. After all, once the attendant locks that safety bar in place, there's no jumping off—you’re committed to the ride, just as you are to life.

Then comes the moment of clarity—the aha moment: Fear is present, but it no longer holds you back. It becomes part of the experience, heightening your senses while joy drives you forward. The more you ride, the quicker joy takes the lead.

The same happens when you make the Chair of JOY® Experience a habit—with the four steps of Sit. Breathe. Think. Feel.™—you start to release your grip on fear. Each time you sit in your Chair of JOY®, whether it's a porch swing swaying in the breeze, a rocking chair by the fire, or a hammock stretched between two trees, you begin to realize that joy is always accessible. The roller coaster simply helped you remember this—helping you navigate life’s twists and turns with confidence, clarity, and momentum because you are now driving from a place of courage and perseverance.

  • Low Joy: When fear is in control and your grip is tight—like the initial climb.
    • Stress feels overwhelming and hard to manage.
    • Decision-making is clouded by doubt and hesitation.
    • Productivity and creativity are limited by fear of failure.

  • Balanced Joy: When fear and joy coexist—hands still on the bar, but loosening.
    • Stress is present, but you feel more capable of handling it.
    • Decision-making becomes clearer as confidence builds.
    • You begin to enjoy challenges, knowing they lead to growth.

  • High Joy: When joy takes the lead—hands in the air, riding the twists and turns with freedom and excitement.
    • Stress becomes a motivator rather than a barrier.
    • Decision-making is fast, confident, and aligned with your goals.
    • Productivity and creativity thrive because fear no longer holds you back.

Think about the demands of your everyday life—balancing work, family responsibilities, and personal goals. How often do you find yourself gripping the safety bar, holding on tightly as stress takes control?

  • For Adults: What if, instead, you could release that grip—allowing joy to rise up and guide you through the twists and turns? Imagine standing in front of a room full of people, preparing to speak. Your heart races, and fear makes you grip the podium tightly. But what if you could loosen that grip, remembering the excitement of sharing your story or expertise? What if joy helped you speak with confidence, connect with your audience, and enjoy the experience rather than fear it?

  • For Kids: Imagine a big test at school, trying out for a sports team, or feeling like you'll never finish your homework. At first, fear makes you hold on tight. But what if you could loosen that grip, remembering that you'll likely get it done—and maybe it won’t be perfect, but you know you always try your best? What if you focused on that effort and let go of the intense grip of fear? What if joy helped you raise your hand with confidence, score that goal, or try something new without hesitation?

That is what Joy Intelligence (JQ) is—it opens up possibility. It allows challenges to be part of your day without holding you back. And as humans, learning to navigate those challenges is essential. With practice, you begin to understand that fear and obstacles are simply part of the ride.

The Chair of JOY® Experience offers a simple, accessible way to make that shift—helping you let go of fear, access joy, and move through life with confidence, energy, and momentum.
